Hundreds of people turn out for the annual Women’s Memorial March

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Hundreds turned out to give a voice to the voiceless at this year’s Women’s Memorial March in Vancouver.

The march takes place every year on Valentine’s Day to remember Aboriginal women who have gone missing or have been murdered.

Audrey Siegel says she has no faith the government will approve a national inquiry into the issue.

“What I see is a complete lack of action in the direction that we need to go in order for me to have hope or a belief that we will have an equal respect, right and dignity in this land that is now called Canada. By we, I mean Indigenous women.”

Seigel says while people think progress has been made, it hasn’t. “I think a lot of people do out of necessity because we’ve moved so far away from where we need to be and into such a dark place, it’s overwhelming to see.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has resisted calls for the inquiry.

A two-year provincial inquiry resulted in a list of recommendations being made.
