How should we be looking at vaccination rates across our country?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As debate continues across North America over whether our kids should be vaccinated, we’re hearing about ways we should be looking at vaccination rates in our country.

Dr. Kumanan Wilson who has studied vaccine hesitancy says there can be a high level of vaccination overall in the country, but at the same time there can be areas or specific pockets where vaccination rates are low, that cluster together.

That’s where outbreaks of disease are most likely to happen. “They looked country-wide and I think Quebec had lower support than other areas, but even within a province, you might find certain areas where rates are lower, and so it’s important to look at this much more granularly than just at a general population level.”

A new poll from Angus Reid looks at attitudes toward vaccination, both across the country, and in individual provinces.

It found nearly nine out of ten Canadians see vaccines as being effective in preventing diseases like mumps, measles, and rubella.
