Just how prepared is Vancouver for a major earthquake?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The big one will happen here, it’s just a matter of when.

In a bid to get more people motivated to prepare properly for an earthquake, the city is releasing a video showing apocalyptic scenes.

In its latest report, it’s estimated that 9000 people will be displaced from their homes and fires will rage throughout the city as gas lines rupture.

Deputy city manager Sadhu Johnston says he hopes the video below will encourage more people to prepare properly.

“Just having a grab and go kit is a simple thing that people can do. Have a spare pair of glasses, have your medication, have a first aid kit, some water and some food so you could just grab that backpack if you have to leave your home for a day or a couple days.”

Sadhu encourages those interested in learning more to contact Vancouver’s call centre. “To anyone that would like training for their own Strata or their business, call 3-1-1. We do many many training’s each year.”

The city is also experimenting with new innovations, including the use of Japanese-designed pipes which are more flexible than the ones in use right now.
