MATSQUI (NEWS1130) – The Matsqui medium-security prison in the Fraser Valley is in lockdown.
An inmate was stabbed Friday evening, and the injuries were serious enough to require he be airlifted to a hospital.
“When there is a serious assault or stabbing the institution calls the staff to lock up the other inmates. It seems like the other inmates were all compliant. There were no issues. They’re all in their cells now,” explains Gord Robertson, the Pacific Regional President of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers.
“The warden of the institution will decide what steps are required. In this case, that will likely entail a full search of the facility for a search of other weapons and other information.”
It’s not known what weapon was used in this case, or who the wounded inmate is.
Earlier this week, Matsqui Institution was cited in a lawsuit. An inmate claims the facility doesn’t provide adequate rehabilitation programming.
