NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A bike route that will eventually stretch from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay is one step closer to reality.
The City of North Vancouver has received a $400,000 BikeBC grant through the provincial government to complete a section of the Spirit Trail.
The money will go towards establishing a bridge over Mosquito Creek, to span the gap between a section that runs from Lonsdale Quay and a portion that links to the Lions Gate Bridge.
Both pedestrians and cyclists use the pathway, but as Tony Valente with the cycling group HUB points out, all travellers will benefit from the upgrade.
“It’s great news. It’s a great improvement, not just for cyclists and pedestrians, but more motorists. When we have this infrastructure in place it’s safer for everybody.”
Valente says a flat waterfront route is key in a municipality known for its steep terrain.
“It is pretty mountainous. But the Spirit Trail is a trail that runs along the shore on the North Shore. That’s obviously a great place to have cyclists. It’s being used quite a bit.”
In fact, the City and District of North Vancouver report the number of cycling commuters on the North Shore has tripled in the last three years.
The new portion of the route should be complete next year.
