Local community group pushing for a “Yes” in the transit tax vote

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – More buses will reduce poverty and help people feel more connected to their community. That is what one group is telling folks at a forum Monday night in Richmond to get them to vote “Yes” in the transportation tax plebiscite.

“If they miss that one bus they might lose their job, it has a lot to do with job opportunities” says Maria Robinson with the Metro Vancouver Alliance talking about why better transit is needed, especially for low-income families that don’t have a car.

She’s also fears without an adequate transportation system people can often feel trapped at home. “It leads to social isolation when people can’t get out to socialize and go to doctor’s appointments, they never see another person.”

She adds her group is helping people especially those without a permanent address get registered to vote by encouraging them to use one from a community centre.

The mail-in ballot on the proposed transit tax goes out starting March 16th and needs to be returned by May 29th
