Few people know about vote ahead of spring plebiscite

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Surrey’s mayor is the latest leader in Metro Vancouver to drum up support for the ‘yes’ side ahead of this spring’s transportation improvement tax vote.

Linda Hepner and her council hit SkyTrain stations and street corners during the morning rush to explain the $7.5 billion transportation plan being promoted by the Mayors’ Council, along with the proposed 0.5 per cent regional sales tax to help pay for it.

News1130 spoke with a cross section of commuters in the city and a significant number of them had not even heard of the transportation plan and the upcoming mail-in vote.

For those who have been following the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ campaigns, polls have suggested the region south of the Fraser River is showing some of the strongest resistance to the proposed Congestion Improvement sales tax.

“I’d just like to see more transparency with TransLink and the way they are spending before I give them more money,” says one man while fueling up on 152nd Street, adding that having Metro Vancouver’s mayors out shaking hands and explaining their plan won’t sway his vote in the upcoming plebiscite.

The first mail-in ballots will be sent out in less than two weeks with voting set to wrap up before the end of May.
