Don’t forget to spring forward this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Your commute could be a little more challenging come Monday morning.  Yes, it’s that time of year again when we lose an hour of sleep, thanks to the arrival of Daylight Saving Time.  And, unfortunately, for many people that lost hour of shut-eye is going to hurt.

The clocks move forward at 2 a.m. on Sunday and losing that hour can have a huge impact, according to Sleep Country Canada’s Christine Magee.

“As we talk about losing an hour of sleep, lots of folks do have a harder time and the reality is because they’re not getting regular sleep to begin with which is so important.”

The World Association of Sleep Medicine says you should be getting between seven and nine hours of rest every night.  However, roughly one-third of us are getting five hours, if we’re lucky.

Jennifer Garden is founder of Vancouver-based Sleepdreams which specializes in sleep consultations for kids.

She adds it’s important to develop good sleep hygiene.  That includes sleeping in a dark room about two or three degrees cooler than normal room temperature.

Garden says when people are falling asleep their body temperature cools, and if the room is too hot, the body’s temperature can’t get down to where it needs to be to fall asleep.
