$24-million expansion for Surrey’s courthouse

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Surrey’s courthouse is set for a $24-million expansion.

Work is expected to begin next year at the location off Highway 10.

By January, construction is set to begin on upgrades to the courthouse; they will include three new courtrooms and a pair of new hearing rooms.

The move by the province aims to ease the case load for BC’s fastest-growing city.

“The expanded courthouse will enhance access to justice for British Columbians [by] reducing delays and court backlogs. It is a major new justice initiative that will work in combination with other innovative approaches we have initiated to enhance citizen safety,” says Justice Minister Suzanne Anton.

“There’s no question this is an extremely busy courthouse. You could see the need just by being in the courthouse, seeing the volume of people and the number of cases that are being handled. There’s no question that an expansion is needed.”

When asked about the decision to expand the courthouse rather than construct a new building, MLA Amrik Virk said the existing building still has many usable years left.
