Would the federal NDP be a better choice for those hoping for a “Yes” in the transit vote?

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair has been in Metro Vancouver explaining his plan for local government.

He says the NDP would be a reliable and willing partner on transit issues. “And beyond that what we are doing is transferring for example a cent of the existing gas tax that’s a 420 million dollar a year shot in the arm for public transit in Canada.”

Mulcair admits quality public transit is a necessity for modern cities and he says his party has a plan for it. “We would transfer in the case of British Columbia upwards of a hundred million dollars and that’s real money. That would be something they could rely on, that would be predictable and that they could receive into the future.

But voters are still wondering if that one third of the funding for the mayors council plan will be there.

Mulcair however would not directly say the NDP would pay the federal third of the funding under the mayors council plan, calling a yes vote a hypothetical situation.

Stephen Harper also refuses to commit.

The mail-in ballot on the proposed transit tax needs to be returned by May 29th.
