Car-share service grows in Vancouver, younger people driving market

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Younger people are driving the growth of the car-sharing industry in Vancouver, as more forgo car ownership and use other options.

BCAA’s Evo is the latest entrant into the market in Vancouver, launching today with a fleet of hybrid hatchbacks meant to appeal to an active demographic, joining established services like Car2Go, Zipcar and Modo.

“Evo is the city’s only pick-up and drop-off anywhere service that offers four-door hybrid vehicles as well as space for five adults, all with bike and ski racks on them,” says BCAA President and CEO Paul Healey.

“If you’re going to Kitsilano or the local mountains for biking or skiing, it allows you to do all of these things,” he tells News1130.

Healey says car-sharing is “a very significant growth market” with many people in the city demanding easy mobility.

“Vancouverites from 18-to-34 are probably our biggest target in this area. Mobility is very important to them in a dense urban centre — it’s actually more important to them than coffee, we found in a recent survey of our customers,” he laughs.

“This is a fast-growing market in many major urban centres and Vancouver is very, very successful at this.”

Evo has a fleet of 250 cars, but Healey says the company plans to add more soon, with three-thousand customers signing up for the service leading up to the launch.
