Should a hazardous waste facility be built along the Fraser River in Chilliwack?

CHILLIWACK (NEWS1130) – A well-known conservationist is hoping a proposed recycling and disposal facility will be in a different spot if it goes ahead.

The plant would recycle florescent lamps and transformer oil among other things. It would also gather hazardous waste and ship it out of the province. Disposal company Aevitas wants to see a facility go up in Chilliwack near the Fraser River.

Mark Angelo with the Protect the Fraser Coalition says he isn’t against having a hazardous waste facility, but he wants to see it much further away from the river.

“You look at the potential for things like spillage, seepage, an accident, flood, fire, or earthquake — the chance of those things happening over time are simply all too real,” he explains.

“If that was to occur, toxic waste would, in all likelihood, flow directly into the river. So the proposal case, we think, is wrought with risk. I think we have to take a much more precautionary approach,” he adds.

We have reached out to Aevitas, but have not yet received a response.
