Women get a lesson on self-defense at Point Grey community meeting

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some women coming out of Vancouver Police say they feel stronger and more confident in dealing with a potential predator. Dozens attended the community meeting held in Point Grey Wednesday night less than a week after a jogger was sexually assaulted in the neighbourhood.

“We have a beautiful forest that we can walk in and I feel it is taken away from me now,” says Claudia still reacting to the attack.

Like many at the meeting, which focused on techniques to protect you from potential predators, she feels a lot stronger and more prepared for the unexpected. “In my behaviour I’ll be much more confident and to be much more ‘situationally’ aware. To know what’s going on, and not to have constantly thinking that you are being followed or attack but know what’s going on especially anything suspicious.”

Others praised police after for the new skills they can take home and share with their friends, mothers, daughters, and even grandmothers.

“The tactics that they’ve showed us especially when it comes to social awareness or your environmental awareness is something I’m definitely going to be taking aware,” says Dayla.

“I think when you get older you’re less strong and maybe you think you need more to help you along the way,” adds Liza.

Police still don’t have a suspect and can’t say if this case is linked to a brutal sex attack in Strathcona on the same day.
