Man falls down North Vancouver ravine, spends night in cold, manages to crawl out

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s an incredible story from North Vancouver; a man had fallen down a ravine near Capilano University, and was heard screaming for help by a woman walking her dog.

The woman found him shortly after 8 a.m. today, but he spent the entire night out in the cold.

“She called 9-1-1. We had about a dozen fire crews and a couple of ambulance personnel on-scene,” says North Vancouver District Assistant Fire Chief Jim Bonneville.

“The went down the trail, prepared for a low-angle rescue, and the 52-year-old man had actually crawled up the ravine before they arrived. he was actually standing there, waiting for him, when they got to him.”

“He was out hiking around yesterday afternoon and became lost in a bush and actually spent the night in the forest down this ravine,” adds Bonneville.

He calls it an amazing outcome.

The man was hypothermic and taken to the hospital to be checked out. He was otherwise unhurt.

He says this is a good reminder for hikers to tell someone where they are going and when they plan to return, try not to hike alone, and be prepared for the elements.
