City crews in second day of clean-up after fuel spill at English Bay

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As the sun comes up in Metro Vancouver, we are getting a clearer idea of how much sludge remains in English Bay and on surrounding beaches, more than 36 hours after a spill of 3,000 litres of bunker fuel was first noticed.

At last report, 80 per cent of the material in the water has been contained.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada says the substance came from a cargo ship from Cyprus on its maiden voyage.

The ship’s crew had denied it was the source of the mess.

At English Bay today, there have been a few signs of the fallout from the spill.

Members of the Oiled Wildlife Socity of BC are working at Second Beach, cameras and binoculars in hand. City signs have been going up along the sand, warning you to stay out of the water.

“There was a light smell of fuel and, after coming out of the sand, I can actually smell it coming from my shoes, as well,” says News1130 reporter Alison Bailey.
