Capilano U. exams up in the air

By

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Capilano University students aren’t happy about sudden changes to their exam schedules, as the result of a labour dispute.

Final exams were to begin on Monday, but the start has been pushed back to Thursday, if a tentative deal is reached.

After several hours on the weekend, the university and faculty failed to reach an agreement to end the strike.

If there is no resolution before Thursday, exams will be cancelled altogether, and final marks will be based on tests and projects completed during the term.

The uncertainty is not sitting well with students.

Brittany Barnes, the president of the Capilano Student Union, says the new exam schedule prevents some students from getting on with their lives.

“This has students really concerned. They’ve booked off time from work. They’ve planned trips around times they thought they were going to finish their exams. They’ve accepted jobs.”

She says nearly 1,000 students have signed a petition, asking for the option to skip final exams.

“Students should be able to choose whether they want to write them. They should be able to opt out, because they might have prior plans that conflict with the new exam schedule.”

About 7,000 students attend the university.
