St. Paul’s hospital is unlikely to be completely demolished: historian

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While there will be pressure to maximize the real estate value of the land the hospital sits on, the building has too much historical significance to be completely demolished says Vancouver historian Michael Kluckner.

“I think it’s very unlikely, I can’t see council wanting to do that. It goes too strongly against the kind of policies that they have,” he explains.

“The buildings are classified very very highly on the city’s heritage register in terms of their architectural quality; of course they have a cultural and symbolic significance for the city.”

He says the question now is how will the re-development site go forward and how much re-use of those buildings will take place.

St. Paul’s was founded in 1894 by the Sisters Of Providence who, from their base in Montreal, founded schools, hospitals and asylums all over North America and other continents.
