Vancouver council approves a controversial Yaletown development

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A controversial Yaletown development has been approved by Vancouver council Wednesday but there’s still a chance it may not be built. The city lost a court battle over a land swap deal once, and could lose again in the appeals process which happens Thursday and Friday.

The Community Association of New Yaletown challenged the city for not giving people enough information about the land exchange with a developer, which would result in a 36-storey tower and smaller tower with some social housing included located near Emery Barnes Park.

President of CANY Jon Green says he’s still upset over the lack of transparency. “It’s important that council release documents to the public that are pertinent to them making decisions on a rezoning.”

He also has concerns about the increase in density. “So you’re going to have this tower in a very small floor plate and it’s going up 36-storeys. They’re going to be permitting the densest residential tower in the city and the trade off, the public benefit is supposed to be social housing but the problem is there’s no net gain in social housing units.”

The rezoning for the project went to another public hearing Tuesday after the court ruled more consultation was needed.
