Vancouver parents upset over political letter sent home with students

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Some parents at Laura Secord Elementary in Vancouver aren’t happy, and say a teacher is pushing her political opinion on Grade Two students — all to do with the English Bay fuel leak.

News1130 has been told that the kids have been asked to copy a letter addressed to the prime minister and the premier. It discusses the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station being closed, saying that led to no one being able to respond to the fuel leak last week.

Vancouver School Board Chair Christopher Richardson says in general teachers are encouraged to talk about civic topics. “However, as part of that we would require or encourage the teacher to ensure that there’s a balanced review of information regarding a subject and that would enable the student to come to their own opinion.”

A copy of the notice sent to parents from the teacher explains the letters would be sent out today.

Several parents at the school tell News1130 they don’t believe this is okay. Each of them have varying political views, some maybe agreeing with the teacher but still saying a political agenda should not ever be pushed on their child.
