Roughly one-third of people have returned plebiscite ballot

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We’ve got the latest numbers from the transportation tax vote — Elections BC says so far 495,000 ballot packages have been received but of that roughly 340,000 have been processed.

Life is too busy was the reason provided by many people when we asked why they haven’t been able to tick a box and mail in their ballot.

“I just haven’t sent it in yet. I haven’t filled it out,” said one man. “But I’m going to!”

“No, I just haven’t,” said another man.

“Just because I’m lazy,” said one Vancouver woman we spoke with. “It’s bad. I feel horrible about it.”

The Township of Langley has the highest participation rate, with 28 per cent of voters ticking a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ box.
Vancouver comes next with 25 per cent of ballots returned.

Of the major municipalities, the City of Langley has the lowest turnout with just 12 per cent getting involved.

“It is important to remind voters who have not yet voted to include both their signature and birthdate in the specified area on their certification envelope,” says Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer. “Completing this simple step is important to ensure that all plebiscite ballots are counted.”

The deadline to mail in your ballot is 8 p.m. on May 29th.
