OTTAWA (NEWS1130) – Canada’s spy agency says that while al-Qaida has been weakened by a potent international anti-terrorism campaign, it remains a serious threat.
In its 2013-14 public report, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service says it still sees support for the militant group in Canada.
C-SIS says the risk of Canadians becoming radicalized into extremism is a legitimate and significant concern.
It calls terrorism the most persistent threat to national security.
The agency also says it’s worried about espionage against Canadian economic, political and military interests.
C-SIS Director Michel Coulombe stresses the terror threat in his portion of the report, stating bluntly, “There are violent people and violent groups that want to kill Canadians.”
