Fewer people driving, opting for bikes and transit: CoV

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – When it comes to getting around Metro Vancouver, many of you are choosing to park the car, that’s according to new numbers from the City of Vancouver suggesting people have found other ways to get from point A to point B.

It turns out 50 per cent of the trips made around town are no longer happening in those cars and that’s up from the last study conducted in 2008 when it was at 40 per cent.

Vancouver City Councillor Heather Deal explains how people are getting around.  “They’re shifting to things like cycling, transit and walking and they’re doing it largely because we’re making sure they can do so in a safe and pleasant way and it’s been tremendously successful.  We’re ahead of our goals and targets and we’re extremely pleased with this result.”

She adds the more people that cycle, the safer it becomes for every road user.

“The more people that are cycling, the safer it becomes because cars start to watch out for cyclists and they start to behave in different ways and we find, in other cities all around the world, that that’s the case and we’re now showing it’s true here as well.”

Deal says the goal by the 2040 is for two-thirds of people in Vancouver choosing alternate forms of transportation.
