NDP wants to all ships built for our province constructed in BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Are we giving up too much in the way of jobs and economic benefits by having ships like ferries and police boats built in other nations?

The NDP’s transportation critic is again trying to make sure ships constructed for public service are built here in BC.

If they can’t be built in this province, they should at least be built in Canada, says Claire Trevena. She’s tabled the Provincial Shipbuilding Act in the legislature, which would make sure that happens.

Trevena says by turning to other countries like Poland and Germany, we’re losing jobs and tax revenue.

“We’ve got to look after the interests of people in BC. That means ensuring people in BC are working, ensuring people in BC are buying in BC, and people in BC are paying taxes in BC. And the only way you’re going to do that is by encouraging industry in BC.”

“We have basically gone to other countries because we feel it’s going to be cheaper without looking at the true economic costs of the loss of tax revenue, the loss of employment,” adds Trevena.

Trevena has tried this before; she proposed similar legislation last year.
