BC unlikely to follow Australia’s lead in method to get kids vaccinated

By

AUSTRALIA (NEWS1130) – Australia is the latest country to get tough on parents who don’t vaccinate their kids – the federal government is going to withhold benefits.

Under the new “no jab, no pay” policy starting next year, parents who don’t provide immunization records won’t get their daycare subsidy or family tax credit.

BC’s Chief Medical Health Officer Perry Kendall thinks this idea will just make poor families poorer.

But he thinks something working in Brazil could be successful here – giving parents a new benefit when they do vaccinate instead of taking one away.

“You have people who just don’t get around to getting their kids vaccinated or get around to providing the information, and this would be an incentive for them.”

About 70 per cent of BC kids are up to date.

BC has no mandatory vaccination policy.
