Victoria Day is a time critics of the Crown suggest Canada doesn't need the Royal family

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Victoria Day is also a time for critics of the Crown to suggest Canada needs to grow up as a country and give the Royals the boot.

Is that possible? The short answer is “yes.” But the Monarchist League likes things just the way they are.

The argument isn’t an easy one admits Keith Roy with the organization. Roy says it comes down to our constitution which gets much of its stability from the Crown.

He believes replacing the House of Windsor with something else doesn’t make sense. “There is a cost to operate the Crown in Canada but that is same cost that we would have if we had a president or some sort of other figure head role as our head of state,” he explains. “The quality of life that we have is not in spite of the crown it is large part because of the crown and what it has done for us through all the years of our confederation.”

“It’s as Canadian as you and I are,” he adds.

Roy says the resurgence of the Crown – from Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations to the recent birth of Princess Charlotte – shows we and the rest of the Commonwealth need the Royals.
