TransLink gets high mark when compared to other systems nation-wide

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Despite a perceived negative reputation, TransLink actually stacks up quite favourably when it compares to systems in other major Canadian cities.

With an A+ rating, Montreal was the only city to outrank TransLink.

“The real surprise for me is that Toronto wasn’t as good as Vancouver and what was really shocking too was that Montreal just shot up above the rest,” says Nathan Pachal, a transit blogger and report card co-author.

Pachal used a number of metrics to get to that conclusion.

“We looked at service hours per capita, revenue kilometres per capita, fair box recovery and then something looking at the efficiency of how transit is run and then we stacked it up.”

Edmonton, Ottawa and Toronto, which is home to the country’s largest system, ranked in the middle of the pack.

“We stood out in our region because of the revenue kilometres per service hour. The buses in our region are going further per service hour than in any other region and that makes a lot of sense because we have one of the largest service areas in Canada,” adds Pachal.

He says the other important factor is called ‘passenger trip intensity.’

“So, that’s sort of the correlation between where transit routes are and demand.  And we found that in Metro Vancouver, there’s a strong link between where transit service is provided and where there is a demand for transit service.”

However, he says in the grander scheme of things, no one system lagged too far behind the pack.
