Whistler village no longer has gang problem: police

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) – People in Whistler still talk about May Long Weekend being the unofficial gang initiation time for Lower Mainland criminals but police say that is not the case anymore.

Sergeant Rob Knapton with Whistler RCMP says they used to have the gang task force up to make sure known gangsters were being monitored. “The last time they were here was two years ago and they stopped at that time because there had been several years of them attending with no indication or suggestion of any gang activity at all.”

Knapton notes the two violent incidents last weekend had nothing to do with gangs. “If we take these two files out of the mix our calls for service and the amount of things we had to deal with is down dramatically from years past.”

Some have called for more to be done about crime, but Knapton says the village is already a very safe place to be.
