AMBER Alerts to appear in Canadian Facebook users’ feeds

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – You’ll now be able to get AMBER Alerts on Facebook.

The posts will appear on your News Feed in the first few hours after the abduction and only in the area where the child has been taken.

The alerts will include a picture and a description of the child and suspected abductor, as well as the description of the suspect vehicle and its license plate number

“We know that when a child is abducted, the most valuable thing we can do is get information out to the public as fast as possible,” said Jordan Banks with Facebook Canada.

“By getting the right information to the right people at the right time through targeted AMBER Alerts on Facebook, we hope to reunite missing children with their families faster.”

Once a police force confirms that a case meets the requirements for an AMBER Alert, the details will be sent directly to Facebook. Police will also determine the target area for each alert before Facebook shares it to your News Feed.

AMBER Alerts have been appearing in American Facebook users’ feeds since the beginning of the year; the social media site is credited with the recovery of at least one abducted child.
