Judge tells BC terror trial jury ‘motive is key’ as deliberation nears

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A BC judge is expected to continue instructing the jury today in the trial of a couple accused of planning a terrorist attack.

John Nuttall and Amanda Korody face numerous charges in the apparent plot to bomb the BC legislature in Victoria on Canada Day in 2013.

Justice Catherine Bruce told jury members on Friday that motive is key in whether the two are guilty of terrorism allegations.

She adds jurors have the option of finding the couple guilty, but without the added weight of acting on behalf of a terrorist group. In order to determine that, Bruce says jurors must consider whether they were motivated by politics ideology.

Nuttall and Korody have pleaded not guilty, and their lawyers suggest undercover police manipulated them into planning the attack.

The jury was shown more than 100 hours of video and audio surveillance collected as part of an elaborate RCMP sting.
