FIFA confident BC Place turf will be ready for first game of World Cup

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – FIFA is confident the turf at BC Place will not be a problem for the Women’s World Cup despite claims from MLS players over the weekend. The tournament officially gets underway this weekend.

Crews have been working to put a stop to the green residue that continues to kick up. The surface was installed last week but the company behind it says it takes six to 10 weeks to properly settle.

Don Hardman with FIFA says there’s been a lot of progress made in the last five days.

“It’s been an aggressive schedule this week but we’re confident we’ll be ready to go for the first match on Monday,” he explains. “Working on compaction and working on some of the testing methods to ensure the criteria and it involves a series of increased maintenance schedule. Working on compacting the turf with some rolling machines, things like that to really accelerate the break-in process.”

Real Salt Lake Goalkeeper Nick Rimando said the surface was slippery after playing on it during this weekend’s match against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
