Special weather statement issued for weekend heatwave

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – It’s going to get hot in the Lower Mainland — so hot, Environment Canada has now issued a special statement.

The sea breeze will cap temperatures in Vancouver in the mid 20s, but the heat will soar into the 30s in the Fraser Valley. Symptoms to look for include dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid breathing and extreme thirst. Best treatment for this is shade and cool water to drink.

However, not everyone has access to these things. Derek Weiss with the Union Gospel Mission says their mobile unit will be out helping the homeless. “Finding people behind warehouses, under bridges… We’re giving them sunscreen. We’re giving them water, especially water bottles that they can fill themselves.”

He says many of these people may not be in the right state of mind to ask for help themselves. Weiss says this program is needed in the summer as much as it is in the winter. “There’s the physical aspect, keeping them healthy, but there’s also the spiritual aspect and the emotion social aspects. Just making sure these people have somebody to talk to and make contact with.”

Weiss says anyone in need can also visit their centre on East Cordova Street in Vancouver.
