Convention, concert, FIFA and cruise ships mean Vancouver is a full house

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you have guests coming in from out of town and they’re looking for a hotel in Vancouver, they might not get their first choice.

Vancouver is hosting tens of thousands of visitors this coming week, and hotels are busy.

“It’s a really good problem to have. A lot of cities are very envious of us,” says Amber Sessions of Tourism Vancouver.

She runs down a number of events that are putting a premium on hotel rooms in Vancouver:

Thousands of players, officials and fans are arriving for Vancouver’s first FIFA Women’s World Cup game on Monday.

Seven cruise ships will touch base from Friday to Monday.

Eleven thousand delegates are expected for the 23rd World Congress of Dermatology starting Monday.

And Shania Twain performs two concerts: one on Sunday and one on Tuesday.

Sessions says it won’t be impossible to find a room, if relatives or friends decide to visit at the last minute.

“Certain days are definitely over 90 per cent sold out. I always recommend people call a hotel directly if they’re scrounging around for rooms.”

Despite the robust business, June isn’t expected to be a lot better than June of 2014.

“We don’t have the full occupancy numbers for June. We are expecting them to very strong. Anecdotally, our hotels are telling they are sold out or close to selling out for various periods this month in June.”

Sessions does say overall, bookings at Vancouver hotels have been about four per cent higher so far this year than last.
