Elderly people can make easy targets for scam artists

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – With World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Monday, News1130 has some tips for protecting yourself and your loved ones from scam artists.

Some seniors have limited family and friends says Notary Public Daniel Boisvert who says fraudsters are trying to take advantage of that. “Claiming to be somebody who is supposed to be a member of their family or something and in the end is actually not. So having those discussions with friends or relatives before proceeding is certainly one the best ways to stay out of those scams.”

Boisvert believes finding somebody you trust is key. “Certainly appointing a person as either a power of attorney so that they can sit down and get access to those record so that they can review them or making the person a joint account.”

He adds that person can act as a second set of eyes to catch any suspicious activity going on when it comes to money.
