Today marks anniversary of 1985 Air India bombing

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Air India bombings which left 331 people dead.

A memorial service will be held tonight in Stanley Park to mark the occasion.

Novelist Padma Viswanathan says if the bombings happened today, they would be treated much differently. “People have referred to the bombing as Canada’s 911 and yet at the time, it was not treated the way 911 was both in the public consciousness and in it’s treatment legally and politically. It wasn’t considered central.”

The vigil is being held at the Air India Memorial, located in Stanley Park’s Ceperley Playground.

It begins at 6:00pm.
