Federal gov’t not likely to step in following new pot regulations: dispensary lawyer

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Legal action from the federal government against the city of Vancouver over its new pot regulations is unlikely, according to a lawyer representing dispensaries.

This comes just one day after the city became the first in this country to outline standards for shops selling marijuana.

The federal government was quick to express disappointment over the city’s move to regulate bud dispensaries, but lawyer Kirk Tousaw, who represents four dispensaries in Vancouver, says he can’t see them actually taking action through the courts to do anything about them.

“The Charter’s not on its side, and I just think that that kind of move would be foolish,” says Tousaw.

He points to a number of legal battles the feds have already lost over pot.

“I think the federal government should have learned by now that when it attempts to restrict access to medical cannabis the courts are not on its side,” says Tousaw.

Of the three NPA councillors who voted against the bylaw, at least one expressed concern the feds would bring the city to court.
