Food scraps recycling program off to a great start: Metro Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s a good start for Metro Vancouver’s food scraps recycling program, according to Metro Vancouver which runs it.

Whether you’re still grumbling about it or embracing it, six months after the new laws were introduced, a lot of us have changed where we dump out leftovers.

A lot of people apparently have been taking part in Metro Vancouver’s mandatory composting program.

The amount of food going into green bins in the first three months of 2015 was up by half over the same period of time last year, according to the regional authority.

Director of Solid Waste Planning Andrew Marr is pleased with the progress.

“The loads of waste that have been coming, 99 per cent of them are complying with the organics disposal ban and less than one per cent are, what we would say, have excessive amounts of food waste in them.”

Marr adds it often takes time for organizations providing the service to get everything prepared. “It usually takes a couple of months and even years for the service providers to get enough bins and enough services in place.”

Enforcement of food recycling rules came into effect on July 1st.

Homeowners and strata councils can be fined or see their service halted if they don’t comply.
