SECHELT (NEWS 1130) – A tree-feller from Gibson’s has died while working at a wildfire outside Sechelt.

The 61-year-old was killed just before noon Sunday at the Old Sechelt Mine fire site.

Constable Harrison Mohr with Sunshine Coast RCMP says it’s a devastating reminder of how dangerous these wildfires are. “Certainly our hearts are with the man’s family and friends as well as everyone else working to extinguish the wildfires across the province as I am sure this news will resonate closely with all of them.”

“This is definitely a devastating reminder of how dangerous these wildfires are not just to those living around them but to the dedicated men and women who work tirelessly to stop
to stop them from reaching our homes and communities as well,” he adds.

WorkSafe BC and the Coroner Service have now taken over the case.

The fire, ten kilometres north of Sechelt, is now 80 hectares in size, and has steadily grown since it broke out on Thursday evening.
