Investigation underway after man killed by Mounties in Port Hardy

One man is dead after being shot by Mounties.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is looking into what happened at a high school in Port Hardy at around 11:00 am this morning.
Police were called to the area on reports a man had been threatening security guards.
The school is being used as a staging area for personnel and helicopters battling local wildfires.
Kellie Kilpatrick with the IIO says their looking for witnesses to come forward, especially if they have cell phone video. “These things happen very quickly [usually] and we welcome any assistance from the members of the public who might have that video. It really assists us in corroborating any type of statements we receive.”
Police officials say the man was waiving a knife when officers opened fire. His identity has not been released.
