Lower Mainland still up for grabs in the federal election

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – We are less than 100 days from a federal election. A new poll shows the Conservatives are in for a fight to keep seats on the west coast.

Mario Canseco with Insights West says there are three ridings in the Lower Mainland still up for grabs.

“When you look at the North Shore ridings, there’s a difference of one point between the Liberals and Conservatives in West Vancouver and North Vancouver so anything can really happen here,” he says. In Vancouver South, the Liberals have a 27 per cent lead with the NDP six points back at 21 per cent and the Tories trailing at 17 per cent.

The numbers from the survey, funded by the Dogwood Initiative, show only one riding is a runaway right now, as the NDP lead the South Okanagan-West Kootenay region.

“The NDP is carving a really huge lead at this stage, 44 per cent, the Conservatives at 20 per cent, the Liberals not really a factor at nine per cent; so essentially a fight between the NDP the federal Conservatives to try and win the seat,” says Canseco.

He warns there is still plenty of time for parties to revise their strategies. “So many things can change during the course of a campaign and it also hinging on how well they do on the televised debates.”

He mentioned Jack Layton and Rachel Notley as examples of how a leader’s debate can change how voters see the parties.

Catch our live stream of the Macleans leader’s debate at 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 6th on NEWS1130.com, and watch it live on City and OMNI.
