There is a health care crisis in small towns: BC NDP

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The provincial opposition is warning of what it calls an emergency health-care crisis in many small BC communities.

NDP Health Critic Judy Darcy just completed a tour of the Interior and says in Logan Lake, the emergency room has been shut down for 16 months.

“We saw a sign outside the Logan Lake health centre that said “emergency room closed but you can go to Kamloops, Meritt or Ashcroft. But then we visited Ashcroft later that day and the emergency room is closed five days a week,” she says. “This is pretty worrisome. It could lead to someone going to the Logan Lake emergency room, finding it closed and then having to double back and go to Kamloops an hour away.”

She wants the province to consult with these towns to come up with a creative way to fix the problem.

“There are dozens and dozens of communities that don’t have access to family practitioners. Whether that’s a general practitioner or a nurse practitioner and that affects their access to many many health services.”
