Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy calls the shooting death of Surrey man during home invasion 'a tragic and senseless act'

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Surrey RCMP say the victim in latest shooting in Surrey was trying to stop an unknown man from breaking into his house. It happened just before midnight yesterday near 64th Avenue and 165th Street.

Sergeant Stephanie Ashton with IHIT says 42-year-old Colin Hill’s family was in the home at the time. “They may at a later date wish to talk about what happened to them but at this point I respectfully ask that the media, the public please allow that family to have their privacy”

Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy calls this a tragic situation. “While we are confident that we have quickly taken the person responsible for this senseless crime into custody, I am still angry at this pointless loss of life.”

Several hours after the Surrey shooting, Burnaby RCMP got a call about a man with a gun trying to break in to another home in that area. The description matched the earlier one and police made an arrest. A 22-year-old Surrey man with an extensive criminal record is now facing second degree murder charges.

The suspects name has not been released until he appears in court tomorrow.
