VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We are entering campaign season for the federal election and new poll suggests it is turning into a three-way race.
The latest numbers show only five points between all three major parties. The NDP is currently in the lead with 32 per cent support, the Tories are in second at 29 per cent, while the Liberals are in a not-so-distant third place with 27 per cent support.
Patrick Smith, a political science professor at SFU, says voters are watching the tight race closely. “If somebody really did trip over their tongues and misspoke outlandishly, that could certainly make a difference.”
There could be could be some events that could change how the election goes.
“The idea that we’ll find out in September that Canada has been in [a] recession is something that’s likely to impact the impact of the economic message for the government,” says Smith. “The price of oil dropping and continuing to drop that’s had a big impact on government finances on all sides so that’s made their economic focus a bit more tenuous.”
Smith says things are about to get interesting with the upcoming leaders debates.
