Warnings and fines for people who violate water restrictions

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As hundreds of people violate water restrictions, the City of Vancouver is beginning to hand out warnings and fines.

The city is trying to get people on board without slapping down a $250 fine, but those who don’t get the message with an initial warning are starting to get that penalty.

Vancouver’s acting general manager of engineering Jerry Dobrovolny says a dozen of those tickets have been handed out.

“It could be repeat offender, it could be willful knowledge,” says Dobrovolny. “We want people to follow the rules.”

In all, the city has delivered 850 warnings to those sprinkling when they shouldn’t and breaking other rules, with homeowners the main culprits.

“As with many of the issues this year, we’re just much further ahead than we are in a typical year,” Dobrovolny says. “The water levels are lower than they are at this time of year typically, the number of warnings are higher, and the number of tickets are higher.”

In related news, the fire department says 11 small wildfires have been started in the city by cigarettes since Wednesday.
