Family member of Air India bombing victim upset with MP’s comments

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The MP for Vancouver South is now saying she misspoke when she suggested the Air India Bombing could have been prevented if C-51 was in place.

Bal Gupta, whose wife died in the Air India bombing three decades ago, says he doesn’t understand why MP Wai Young tried to make the connection she did.

“It’s the same foot in mouth disease that some politicians [have],” says Gupta. “It does upset me.”

He supports C-51 and other laws meant to clamp down on terrorism, saying he’d prefer that legislation to stand on its own merits rather than tie in a hypothetical situation around how the attack could have been stopped

“I don’t know what to say, except to say it was naive and uncalled for,” says Gupta. “I don’t think she had to use it to support C-51.”

Young now says she regrets her comments she made at a church event last month, which only came under scrutiny in the last 48 hours.
