Heritage groups question changes possibly coming to Burrard Bridge

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – During public consultations about proposed upgrades to the historic Burrard Bridge, one major detail was left out and some organizations are not happy.

Anthony Norfolk with the Vancouver Heritage Commission says he isn’t against suicide prevention barriers on the bridge but he is shocked no one mentioned the barriers.

“The problem here is that the very last minute, with a very restricted form of consultation in sending it to the heritage commission, these very two important features of the design as it’s now proposed have never been considered by all the stakeholders that were involved earlier on.”

The Heritage Society, in an email, recognize the importance of saving lives, but it is hoping to encourage more dialogue with the City of Vancouver before the changes that would significantly alter the appearance of the bridge.

In the email the society stats, “we are strongly committed to being a part of a widespread public consultation on this project where Heritage Vancouver can contribute by offering insight on proposed interventions as they relate to the context of the unique heritage and visual experience of this landmark bridge.”

Council will be looking at the proposed changes next week.

“The problem here is that the very last minute, with a very restricted form of consultation in sending it to the heritage commission, these very two important features of the design as it’s now proposed have never been considered by all the stakeholders that were involved earlier on,” add Norfolk.

The budget for the Burrard Bridge upgrades is $35 million.
