Champion of gay rights and free speech may get a permanent memorial

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A leader in Vancouver’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community could finally get his due.

Vancouver City Council is looking a motion that would see an intersection in the West End named after Jim Deva.

It is asking council to approve the closure of Bute Street south of Davie in order to create a permanent public square known as Jim Deva Plaza.

The late co-founder of Little Sisters bookstore died last year at the age of 64.

Deva and his partners took their free speech and gay rights battle all the way to the Supreme Court after Canada Border Services stopped materials it deemed obscene from being delivered to the store.
