RCMP warns of disturbing child porn trend in BC

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Disturbing information coming from the RCMP.

The British Columbia Integrated Child Exploitation Unit says between April 1 and September 30, 2014, investigators found more than 1,200 instances in BC of online file sharing involving child pornography.

Police say they’re now going after those believed to be responsible.

“Frankly, even as a police officer who investigates this type of crime, the extent of problem is disturbing,” says Inspector Ed Boettcher, Officer in Charge of BC RCMP Communications. “A single exchange of material where a child was victimized is too many, this many instances over a six month period is tragic.”

“This project established a baseline of what was happening in the province, and we feel that it is important for the public to be aware of the issue,” says Boettcher. “People need to monitor computers in their own homes and businesses. If you suspect that somebody has been using it to download or exchange explicit illegal materials please contact your local police.”

The exploitation unit is working with RCMP around the province to further investigate.

More to come.
