Justin Trudeau says no thanks to the idea of a coalition

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The federal Liberals are throwing cold water on the idea of a coalition with the New Democrats to topple the Harper Conservatives, if the Tories return to power this fall.

It comes as the NDP once again floats the idea ahead of the federal election in October.

The New Democrats say their priority is to form a majority government but if the Conservatives win the fall vote with a minority, Toronto NDP MP Andrew Cash says he wouldn’t mind teaming up with the Liberals.

“We would be very open to a coalition, if that’s the way in which the seats in the House of Commons shook down.”

But Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is nixing the idea, saying while he’s open to working with other parties to pass important legislation, there will be no formal coalition with the NDP.

“There are a number of issues on which the Liberal party of Canada and the NDP disagree in quite a fundamental level,” says Trudeau.

There was nearly a coalition seven years ago but the prime minister blocked the effort by asking the governor general to prorogue parliament.
