Booked a resort in area affected by wildfire? Know the cancellation policy!

WEST KELOWNA (NEWS 1130) – Wildfires are affecting some resorts and cabin owners around the province, forcing them to offer compensation to those who have booked.

Some resorts around the Westside Road fire near West Kelowna have lost power and are offering credit or the option to re-book, but are not offering refunds.

Evan Kelly with the Better Business Bureau says there are no laws in BC which spell out what a business has to do if it can’t offer the service initially promised.

“Any business like this — you’re booking time or something like that — everything should be fairly crystal clear in the contract,” says Kelly. “If there is a cancellation policy, that should be stipulated there as well.”

So, the BBB’s message is simple: When you’re booking anything, make sure you read the small print.

“Businesses are really at their own discretion in terms of refunds, cancellation or return policies,” says Kelly.

He adds the BBB would only get involved in situations like these if a company violated its own cancellation policy.
