New 150-hectare wildfire burning on Vancouver Island

By

COWICHAN VALLEY (NEWS 1130) – The newest big wildfire burning in BC is not contained and estimated to be about 150-hectares in size.

This one is close to Lizard Lake, which is southwest of Cowichan Lake on Vancouver Island.

At this point it’s not near any homes or other properties and Kevin Skrepnek with the BC Wildfire Management Branch calls it very active.

“Certainly it is causing a quite a bit of smoke in the area so that is hampering us form ascertaining a more accurate picture of what’s going on out there. We’ve got over 40 personnel with air support and heavy equipment responding”

It’s burning on a steep slope, and the smoke in the area is also making it hard to fight.

Skrepnek says the fire, at this point, is zero per cent contained and it is not near any homes or other properties.
